It is the fourth Columbia Pictures film based on the Marvel Comics character Spider-Man and the first film in a rebooted Spider-Manfilm franchise. The film is being directed by Marc Webb. The cast includes Andrew Garfield asPeter Parker, Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy and Rhys Ifans as Dr. Curt Connors. The film will portray Peter Parker as he is developing his super powers in high school. • Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy: A high school classmate and love interest of Peter Parker.
  • Rhys Ifans as Dr. Curt Connors / The Lizard: A scientist who tests lizard serum on himself in an attempt to regain his missing right arm, which unexpectedly transforms him into areptilian humanoid monster. In a September, 2011 interview, Ifans claimed that his character spends the majority of the film as a human. While filming for the 9-foot tall Lizard, Ifans was required to wear a CGI suit. Initially, a large stunt-double was used as a stand-in for the role but Ifans insisted on portraying the transformed character, to which Webb agreed. Commenting on the technology used to bring his character to life, Ifans continued "I had a green suit on, and then this cardboard head, and these big claws. It was the most fucking insane… Each and every time you see the Lizard, the technology is so advanced now that when the Lizard's eyes move, they're my eyes. If I frown or show any emotion, they're my emotions. That's how spectacularly advanced technology is."
  • Martin Sheen as Ben Parker: Peter Parker's uncle.
  • Sally Field as May Parker: Ben Parker's wife, and Peter Parker's aunt.
  • Denis Leary as Captain George Stacy: Gwen's father and a New York City Police Department captain.

  • Miles Elliot as Billy Connors: Dr. Curt Connors' son.
Spider-Man co-creator Stan Lee has a cameo, as he did in the previous films, which will involve him in an action scene and which he referred to as his "best, most unusual one yet!"At the 2011 Dallas Comic-Con, Lee enthusiastically talked about his cameo. He will play a librarian listening to music on his headphones while stamping books and dancing at the same time, despite the on-going fight between Spider-Man and The Lizard.

Production

Development

Simultaneous with the cancellation of Spider-Man 4, Sony Pictures Entertainment announced that the franchise would be rebooted with a new director and new cast. The Amazing Spider-Man is scheduled to be released on July 3, 2012 in 3-D and is intended to focus on Peter Parker developing his abilities in high school. Sony also confirmed that James Vanderbilt would write the script for the new film and Marc Webb, whose previous film (500) Days of Summer was his directorial debut, would direct the reboot. Entertainment Weekly called Vanderbilt's script "gritty, contemporary" and referenced Batman BeginsChristopher Nolan's reboot of the Batman film series, which also reinvented the tone of the series. There is speculation that the reboot will be based on the Ultimate Spider-Man comics. Evidence includes the fact that Brian Michael Bendis, creator of the Ultimate Spider-Man series, met with the movie crew. Bendis tweeted, "Just spent a very interesting morning at Sony with the entire spidey movie team!! Very very cool stuff!!"Alvin Sargent was hired to fine-tune the script.

Stone at 2011 Comic-Con to promote the film
In May 2010, the list of actors to play Spider-Man included Jamie Bell, Josh Hutcherson, Frank Dillane, Alden Ehrenreich and Andrew Garfield, and in June 2010 the Los Angeles Times reported that the shortlist had expanded to include Aaron Johnson and Anton Yelchin. The final shortlist was reported to also include Logan Lerman and Michael Angarano. On June 27, 2010, the final and confirmed short list was announced: Jamie Bell, Anton Yelchin, Aaron Johnson, Andrew Garfield, Logan Lerman, and Alden Ehrenreich. On July 1, 2010, it was confirmed that the role would go to Andrew Garfield. Currently, Garfield is 27, which raised concerns about his ability to play a high school student. The website HitFix reported that Sony realized this and thus the new movie may instead have Parker starting the series as a college student, butEntertainment Weekly later reported that the film is still set in high school. Reportedly Sony is currently holding auditions for the role of a young Peter Parker. Garfield, who was a fan of the comic book from the age of four, drew from his own life experiences as inspiration for the role, revealing, "I was thinking of my history and thinking of the kid at school who I wasn't as strong as, who behaved badly to a lot of people – including myself – and who I constantly tried to stand up to but never had the physical prowess to".On taking over the role, Garfield stated, "I see it as a massive challenge in many ways....To make it authentic. To make the character live and breathe in a new way. The audience already has a relationship with many different incarnations of the character. I do, as well. I'm probably going to be the guy in the movie theater shouting abuse at myself. But I have to let that go. No turning back. And I wouldn't want to". It was reported that the film would feature both Mary Jane Watson and Gwen Stacy as love interests, but the website The Wrap later reported that only Gwen Stacy will appear in the film.In August 2010, the list of actresses to play the love interest included Imogen Poots, Ophelia Lovibond, Lily Collins, Teresa Palmer, and Emma Roberts, and in September 2010 Variety reported that the shortlist had expanded to include Emma Stone and Mia Wasikowska. The shortlist was reported to also include Dianna Agron, Georgina Haig, and Dominique McElligott. On October 5, 2010, it was confirmed that the role of Gwen Stacy would go to Emma Stone.

‘Give me proof, and I'll walk out myself'
The Darshan-Vijayalakshmi case took another curious turn, with the Kannada Film Producers' Association (KFPA) turning its ire on model-turned-actor Nikita Thukral, for allegedly “creating disharmony in Mr. Darshan's family.”
For this, she has been banned from acting in Kannada movies for three years, while Mr. Darshan, the perpetrator of the violence against his wife, appears to have been let off the hook by the producers' forum.
The KFPA, after an emergency meeting here on Sunday, imposed the ban on the multilingual actor. According to KFPA sources, association president Munirathna announced the decision.
“We felt that Ms. Nikita was responsible for creating a big storm in Mr. Darshan's family life,” actor-producer Rockline Venkatesh told The Hindu.
“A stringent initiative is needed against her. Thus, the KFPA decided that none of the producers should sign her up for three years,” Mr. Venkatesh added.
Mr. Darshan's wife, Vijayalakshmi, had named Ms. Nikitha in her police complaint against her husband, which she later withdrew in front of the metropolitan magistrate.
Meanwhile, Ms. Nikita, who is based in Andhra Pradesh, has slammed the producers' association's decision. “The KFPA should give me proof about an affair with Mr. Darshan. I will voluntarily walk out of the Kannada film industry,” a furious Ms. Nikita told presspersons.
Ms. Nikita has acted in ‘Vamshi,' ‘Nariya Seere Kadda,' ‘Prince,' ‘Sangolli Rayanna' and ‘Yodha' in Kannada. She has also acted in several Telugu and Tamil movies.

Remembering a remarkable mother

A son recalls the life and work of an accomplished lyricist-composer, arguably South India's first woman music director, on the occasion of her birth centenary
All of us siblings called her “Patta,” occasionally as “Pattamma,” but rarely ever merely as “Amma” — which was what she was. For, she was as much a friend and an equal as she was mother. September 11, 2011 marks her birth centenary. These are a son's random reflections.
She had lost her mother when she was three days old. Her maternal grandparents, Visalakshi and Rao Bahadur K.S. Venkatarama Iyer, decided to treat her as their daughter and named her Meenakshi, which was the name of her mother, whom they had lost. She was brought up in a prosperous household: it is said that she was often made to sit on a heap of gold coins with which she was allowed to play.
When she was hardly seven, a guru initiated her with srividya mantropadesam. Her devotion made her spend hours in daily pooja. Her Sanskrit and Tamil lyrics were blessed by Ramana Maharishi, the Paramacharya of Kanchi and Swami Chinmayananda.
As she was nearing nine, as per custom her marriage with K. Subrahmanyam was arranged. He was still a student. He later gave up his legal practice and became a cinematic pioneer of South India: “Director K. Subrahmanyam.”
As a child, Meenakshi had learnt Sanskrit at home. She was an accomplished singer, proficient in playing the veena, the violin and the harmonium. Veena became her forte.
The combination of her scholarship in Tamil and Sanskrit and her effervescent creativity as a Carnatic musician made her a lyricist-composer. During a life of 76 years, she composed almost a thousand songs in Tamil and Sanskrit – kirtanas with full notations. While much of this was her expression of bhakti, she also wrote songs in praise of nature and dealing with contemporary societal problems.
Although she was not a part of her husband's creative efforts during the first decade of his career as a director, in the late-1940s he began to utilise her talents as a lyricist and music composer. Arguably, she was South India's first woman music director. Her verses on Mahatma Gandhi were notable. Her concern over inequities in the newly independent nation found expression in her songs for Subrahmanyam's Tamil film Geetha Gandhi (1948).
She taught her children music, and on all of them she wielded a magical influence – not with a disciplinarian's approach but through sheer endearment. She trained my sister Neela in the fundamentals of music and musicology, made her a concert artiste, and contributed to her becoming the head of a music college in Madurai. She made an immeasurable contribution in making my sister Padma Subrahmanyam a success as a dancer. She inspired my brother S.V. Ramanan to compose music for stage shows and for his short films.
She endeared herself to everyone she came into contact with – artistes, political personalities, Left leaders who were my father's friends, as well as the members of the Mylapore aristocracy.
My mother was shaken by the trauma of my father getting one more woman (S.D. Subbalakshmi, a star he had introduced) as life-partner. But over a period she took it in her stride with stoic resignation.
She was never upset by the ups and downs of her husband's career as a filmmaker. On the contrary, she was proud of his patriotism resulting in financial losses. One of his important films, Thayagaboomi, based on a story by Kalki, was banned by the colonial government.
Her equanimity was shaken in the last decade of her life after a relative cheated her out of her ancestral property. More than the loss of her ancestral home, the thought that someone she had trusted had deceived her, upset her.
Perhaps the acid test for a woman lies in how she gets along with her daughters-in-law. When Mohana, my wife (at that time she was a senior scientist in a government-run research institute), developed a misgiving that I was getting friendly with another woman, she chose to confide not in her parents, not in her friends, but in her mother-in-law. My mother kissed her and advised her: “Babu [as I am called at home] does not merely love you. He respects you, as every man should respect his wife.” She moved into our house for a few weeks and ensured that relationships were not strained.
A mother is indeed more than a thousand times worth all the details in her biodata. On this centenary occasion, let me invoke her blessings.
